I hesitated awhile where to put this article - to microsoft sql server or MySQL section. In the end I decided it more relates to MySQL.. Very often DBA faces the fact that he can't populate his ms sql server database. The reason may be that operational system other than windows or license restrictions etc. In such situation the most popular solution is MySQL dbms. Because it is absolutely free, cross-platform, open source, available on any hosting and relatively functional/fast. |

Two DB-Staff MS SQL Server database administrators has recently successfully passed 70-453 exam. This means that DB-Staff now holds two out of approximately 100 mcitp:dba2008 in the world. 70-453 exam consists of two parts. 25 questions in the first section with given time 65 minutes and 23 questions in the second part - 60 minutes. Time counts separetely for the parts which means if you have not used all the time from first section it does extend to the second part. Questions are mostly referred to the sql server itself, not only to 2008 version. The preparation guide below should be enough to pass the upgrade since a lot of questions apply to sql server 2005 where you are already mcitp:dba (if you did not use testkings/dumps to obtain this credential ). First of all I strongly recommend that you read Introducing SQL Server 2008 book (which is the only book available about sql server 2008 for now) it consists of only 200 pages but is very useful. |

Moving databases across a distributed environment very often results in collation conflict. For instance you have two sql server boxes - one in China and another one in Californina. No wonder two servers use differrent collations lets say Chinese_PRC_CI_AI and Latin1_General_CI_AS. And most probably databases hosted on each server have its server collation. One day you copy database from China to your US server and restore it. Everything goes well unless you don't use tempdb. |

Microsoft just released service pack 3 (sp3) for SQL Server 2005 and found that previous version of sql server 2005 is extremely vulnerable. Looks like it is very time to begin upgrading sql server 2005 instances to service pack 3. According to Microsoft Security Advisory (961040) vulnerability in SQL Server Could Allow Remote Code Execution. |
